Why I am a republican?

One of the main differences between republicans and
democrats lies in their attitude toward the government.
A century ago the government was much smaller than today. However, it is impossible to find a politician from
any mainstream party advocating the return to this
time. In other words everybody agrees that the
role of the government changes in time and can become bigger when it is necessary to respond to changing situation.
I am sure that today the federal and state governments
are too invasive and it is necessary to restrict their power.
This is the main reason why I call myself a republican.
From the other side in some questions the
government is more efficient than private sector
(and everybody thinks this way; otherwise we would have
no government).
There are two different measures of the size of the government: the amount of taxes we pay and the number of
people on government payroll. I believe that the number of government officials is too big; many of them are allowed to make decisions that should belong to us and their decisions
are notoriously inefficient. We need smaller government
and smaller government will need less taxes.

From the other side , it is not true that that taxes are always wrong. An example of right thing is Social Security tax. SSA officials don't have any discretion in spending our money; their role is purely technical. (I am not talking about SSI and disability insurance.) All decisions were made by Congress after serious deliberation and these decisions were reasonable. (Alas, this is not always the case.) This is a model of correct government intervention: a general framework created by Congress that leaves no room for discretion of officials. An example of wrong way of intervention is ADA (Americans with disabilities Act) with its vague formulations that can be interpreted in different ways by officials and judges.
However, ADA is a masterpiece of clarity and transparency in comparison with American tax code.
I'll try to suggest ways to avoid undue influence of officials without cutting government services . Some of my suggestions are based on new opportunities opened in computer era.

Why I am starting this blog?

I am very unhappy with Bush as a President.
In this blog I'll try to convince people that his policy
directly contradicts to the ideals of Republican party:
small government, fiscal responsibility, pragmatism.
His policy is driven by radical ideology .
I'll try to suggest solutions to our problems that can
enjoy bipartisan support.
